The man's arrest stemmed from an incident on Tuesday, March 12 just before 7:45 p.m., when North Castle Police found a 65-year-old man covered in blood lying in Old Mount Kisco Road between Main Street and Eden Hunt Place in Armonk, according to the department.
The victim, a North Castle resident who was in a semi-conscious state, was taken to the Westchester Medical Center emergency room by an Armonk Fire Department ambulance.
Police then began an investigation into the incident and found paint chips and vehicle debris in the area where the victim had been found. Authorities determined that the incident had been a car crash and were able to use additional information to identify a vehicle of interest.
An officer searching the area around the crash soon found this vehicle unoccupied and saw that the paint chips recovered at the scene matched the body damage on the car. The vehicle also had new paint applied to the damage that was still wet to the touch. This led police to impound the vehicle for further investigation.
Eventually, police identified the car's driver and arrested a 71-year-old Flushing resident on Wednesday, March 13 at around 3:20 p.m.
The driver, whose name was not released, was charged with:
- Leaving the scene of an accident with serious physical injuries;
- Tampering with physical evidence.
The suspect will appear in the Town of North Castle Court on Tuesday, March 26.
In a statement on Thursday, March 14, North Castle Police Chief Peter Simonsen commended his department's officers for successfully finding the driver.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim as he recovers from his injuries," Simonsen said.
